MIM NOTES No. 190 July 15, 1999 Why Maoists read the Wall Street Journal: Business newspaper exposes paper trail of segregationist money by MC45 The Wall Street Journal reported on 11 June that a northern millionaire had made substantial anonymous monetary contributions to a Southern segregationist society that helped to terrorize Blacks and Civil Rights Movement participants. The beacon of old Amerikan money and high finance reports that Wickliffe Draper made donations in stocks whose worth ranged in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cause of perpetuating advanced national oppression in the southern u.$. The Civil Rights Movement was a deep reformist struggle. Many of the participants and leaders worked with the knowledge that while segregation was only legal in the old slaveholding states, it was enforced throughout Amerika. Continued legal segregation -- which until this year in Alabama prohibits Blacks and whites from inter- marrying -- exposes the hypocrisy of this country's claims to promote liberty and justice for all citizens. Facts like this one help to underscore the importance of putting our time and money into fighting the entire system that maintains national oppression rather than attacking its symptoms. Reformism will never go further than the symptoms but MIM seeks to cure the disease of imperialism by overthrowing it and establishing a system in the interests of the majority of the world's people where no nation oppresses or exploits another nation.
