MIM Notes 194 September 15, 1999 Maoist radio program grows, seeks more stations The Under Lock and Key radio program, bringing a Maoist perspective on prisons to the airwaves, continues to grow in 1999. With the release of the 4th CD of programs this year, a total of 25-fifteen minute programs have been recorded. A second CD with five more programs is nearing completion as of this report. The show is being aired on at least five stations in the U.$. and Canada. The program is also being distributed in an electronic format called mp3 on the internet on site called Radio for All. (http://radio4all.web.net). A number of stations are downloading the program and playing it without our knowledge, effort or expense. We have only found out about the use of the programs through complaints when we were late uploading another batch of programs. We invite all radio stations to broadcast these programs, our only requirement is that MIM be given credit for the show (the credits are included in each program). We expect the program to take another leap forward when college students return this fall and start up their stations again. Historically, college stations have been much more willing to broadcast political commentaries than their more financially focused counterparts at the commercial or "Public" stations. Many of the stories on the radio program appear in print in MIM or RAIL publications. We have also played speeches from MIM and RAIL events, as well as radio commentaries by drug war prisoners, by Mumia Abu Jamal, and by other of the leaders of the struggle to free Mumia. This radio program was originally marketed under the name RAIL Radio and solely attributed to the work of RAIL comrades. Because the majority of the news stories originate as articles in MIM Notes and because MIM comrades play the key roles in organizing and producing the program, we are now making more clear the leadership role of the Party in our credits for it. MIM continues to lead the Under Lock and Key radio program with considerable assistance from RAIL (which also develops its own programs). The radio program has received valuable contributions of equipment from the masses. Contact MIM if you can contribute more equipment. Currently, we need two microphone stands and a Quadra or newer Macintosh for dedicated CD duplication In addition, our biggest need is to get the program on more stations. To date, the most successful method has been to approach individual DJs who air political music or commentaries. We are asking for a $5 donation for each CD of 4-5 programs, but are willing to waive the donation if the program is being aired. Financial contributors to underwrite our publicity, compact disc purchasing and postage are also needed. If you can sent a few bucks to help expand this important radio project send your check or money order to MIM, P.O. Box 3576, Ann Arbor, MI 48106 and make it out to MIM. Be sure to include a note specifying that this contribution is for the Under Lock and Key radio program. What follows is a rough schedule of where you can hear the program. Not all stations play all programs, and sometimes they play more than one at a time. In addition, segments of the show have aired on other stations during interviews with MIM.
