MIM Notes 229 March 1, 2001 Letters Prisoner programs offered Dear MIM, I am a concerned citizen interested in prison reform and the institution and enforcement of human rights within the penal system in the United States. I would greatly appreciate being added to your mailing list in the hope of keeping abreast of human need and benevolence. I understand that you also have a mailing list of the names and institution numbers and addresses of prisoners caught up in the system. The purpose of acquiring the names is to offer inmates the opportunity to advertise for companions on the outside which might do much to boost their morale thus motivating them through change to strive for the day when they will be able to return to society and allow them to establish relationships that may in turn result in lasting relationships for these men and women though they are presently incarcerated. Please forward this information to me at I would really like to thank you for your assistance in advance and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Respectfully requested, A friend in the Midwest November 2000 MIM responds: Thanks for your interest in our prisons work. We have added you to the mailing list of the Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist League (RAIL), a mass organization led by MIM. MIM runs the mailing list to keep interested people up to date on important anti-imperialist news and revolutionary agitation campaigns. You can find more information about MIM and RAIL and our prisons work at our web site www.prisoncensorship.info/archive/etext. We would welcome more discussion with you about this work This letter seems to be requesting a copy of the MIM prisoner mailing list. We don't share this information with any individuals or organizations. Prisoners entrust us with their personal information and expect us to keep this private. One important reason for this is the political persecution prisoners can face when it is learned that they are interested in revolutionary politics. We do not want to expose our prisoners to any additional risks. We invite prison activists with programs to offer to prisoners to send us information about these programs and we will keep it on hand for prisoners who might be interested. We also want allies to help directly with MIM's work with released prisoners. When prisoners are finally released, they are left with few resources and skills. Amerika is not interested in helping released prisoners become productive world citizens on the outside, but MIM is. MIM continues to organize with released prisoners, just as we do with other individuals on the outside. Our allies can help in many ways. For example, you can help set up public speaking engagements (with honoraria) for MIM and released prisoners to mobilize opposition to Amerikkkan prisons.
