Vendetta Red reviewed

"Between the Never and the Now"
Vendetta Red
Sony
2002

The first link that Vendetta Red's corporate website points to is "Not In Our Name," an organization opposing the war in Iraq. The links also point to the anti-Bush website smirkingchimp.com and the liberal website commondreams.org and the anarchist-libertarian website indymedia.org. Despite the links though, the lyrics to this music are too obscure in their writing (not their enunciation) to have impact.

To be sure, there is talk of death and injustice. "On my tombstone I read the epitaph 'Here lies a man who lieved And died a slave'" is part of the song "Ambulance Chaser."

In fairness, it's obviously part of the band's intention to go into a dreamy, shall we say, psychedelic state-of-mind in some of the songs. "Accident Sex" is about a dream. "There only is" mentions "womb dreams." There is also the song "opiate summer" and mentions of haunting in "Lipstick Tourniquets."

In "Por Vida" the bands says "I am just a moron in disguise posing as the poet with the incandescent eyes." Rather than the "moron" explanation, the reviewer is inclined to believe this is another band that gets too complex in order to avoid making direct statements and alienating audiences.

Actually the best of the lyrics are on "Por Vida," where the band says to god, "thanks for the suffering." We see an image of god ignoring the pleas of the suffering on earth. Then on the other hand, being ignored by god is good preparation for living in hell. "No one can save us from god not even death."

What with the word "Red" in the band's name, "Vendetta Red" has our attention. The screaming alone on "Stay Home" gives us an idea what these guys can do. Various fans appreciate the band for its diverse Seattle hard rock sounds. In the future, we hope for better things.
