"Both the Soviet Union and China have, in the main, accomplished the transformation of the ownership of the means of production, at least in the industrial sectors. This signifies the material consolidation of socialism. Those gains of socialism, going beyond war-time communism and the control of the state, cannot be easily reversed. This is in opposition to the contentions of Mao, and especially Chang Chun-chiao of the Four. . . . While revisionists can speed up or slow down the economy and the degree of consolidation of socialist revolution, capitalism cannot be 'easily rigged up' from the top.'"--Jerry Tung, 34 years old, chair of Communist Workers Party in 1981 in his book The Socialist Road page 16. [MC5 comments why this quote is wrong: Just before the Soviet Union collapsed, it achieved the greatest influence within the united $tates. In the early 1980s, even before the huge popularity of Gorbachev, the tide turned decisively in favor of the Soviet Union among organizations calling themselves "communist." The two greatest coups for the Brezhnev revisionists were the "Line of March" publication and the "Communist Workers Party," both former followers of Mao. Less surprising was that the less radical Communist Labor Party also took up the "restoration of capitalism is impossible" line. The CWP collapsed soon after, and we should note that before that the killing of five of its members at Greensboro, North Carolina by KKK/Nazis/Uncle $am in 1979 was infamous internationally. The quote is a "we-told-you-so" because it was rejection of the "Gang of Four" and acceptance of the theory of the productive forces that led to the CWP's overall incorrect estimation of the Soviet Union, proved a handful of years later when the Soviet Union collapsed. In the early 1980s, MIM struggled with Line of March, CWP and League of Revolutionary Struggle--to no avail. They all collapsed. Although we ended mostly in disagreement, there were many correct things about CWP. We cooperated with them to expose "Attica" to the public and I appreciate one turn of phrase from a CWP comrade and recruiter about the nature of advanced people that I still remember. It was to the effect that advanced people do not need to be badgered by recruiters. They prove themselves.]
