This is an archive of the former website of the Maoist Internationalist Movement, which was run by the now defunct Maoist Internationalist Party - Amerika. The MIM now consists of many independent cells, many of which have their own indendendent organs both online and off. MIM(Prisons) serves these documents as a service to and reference for the anti-imperialist movement worldwide.

Why can't the current system bring freedom?

by Web Minister January 24 2004

January 8th 2004, not far from a Barnes & Nobles bookstore at New Hope Commons, Durham, North Carolina.

Despite many court rulings against shopping malls, airports and even backyard barbeques that invite the public to their property and then claim a right to muzzle the public, private property owners still disrupt so-called freedom of speech on a regular basis. The law that the public does not surrender its rights on private property is not enforced. Instead of facing multi-million dollar fines and jail time the way they should, mall-owners can relax knowing that only ice-cream thiefs in California get life imprisonment.

The reason capitalism does not bring freedom is that for the bourgeoisie property rights are higher than the right to eat, have housing, obtain proper medical care and yes, speak out. To those who say they have "free speech" in the imperialist countries, we say a) you have not tried it like MIM has, at least not in opposition to property's interests b) most u.$. and other imperialist repression occurs in the Third World where the people fight imperialist property interests on a daily basis.

The libertarians believe that it is possible to fight directly for freedom within a capitalist society. We say they are mistaken and do not understand how society works. If private property were compatible with freedom, we would not be seeing signs like the above and privately hired guards would not be attacking political activists in shopping malls.

The only reason that a mall would allow speech is successful class struggle. The inertia and bias to the existing system is against free speech. For every court case successfully concluded there were 10,000 instances of harassment of political activists by mall guards or other representatives of private property that garnered no attention.

Contrary to sterile anarchist and libertarian arguments, repression is a result of social motivations. Rulers and property-owners carry out repression to benefit their interests, not for its own sake.
