This is an archive of the former website of the Maoist Internationalist Movement, which was run by the now defunct Maoist Internationalist Party - Amerika. The MIM now consists of many independent cells, many of which have their own indendendent organs both online and off. MIM(Prisons) serves these documents as a service to and reference for the anti-imperialist movement worldwide.

"What are your sources?"

Unlike most corporate newspapers, magazines and even some books that do not document the sources of their background information while doing better with direct quotes from people currently in the news, MIM puts the sources it uses for background in footnotes.

This question of "what are your sources" almost always identifies someone in the following categories:
*intellectually lazy
*weak reference skills
*from a background where knowledge comes from a single "trusted" source, which in effect is a worship of authority

"What are your sources" is a kind of nihilist save-all for the lazy. The worst only believe the Bible and that makes dispute a lot easier but worthless.

Very rarely in anything social or political are the important questions ones of sources. The "whodunit" kind of questions such as who killed historical Soviet leader Kirov might enter that realm, but then again, MIM would not say such "whodunit" questions should be the focus. When we are talking about the contrast between socialism and capitalism, we should focus very broadly on the difference in the millions of actions inspired by socialism and the millions of actions inspired by capitalism.

More important than the question of sources is how much investigation people do with what thought processes of comparison if any. Beyond that, people should realize when their ideas come from Hollywood or for-profit media that need to sensationalize and simplify things in order to attract customers. Most people know they should not substitute a movie or even a novel by a highly intelligent persyn for an historical or statistical investigation: that's not controversial. Once people sit down and think calmly, they will find that few important questions really revolve around the reliability of sources. MIM can base the entirety of its line on bourgeois sources of information and founder of scientific communism Karl Marx based his work on all non-Marxist sources.

Today there is a great tool, www.google.com. Many important things to know are already there for those who bother to look. MIM also has a search page to do further reference work just on MIM articles
