The Brigade's namesake, Edith Lagos, was a leading member of the Peruvian Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) (Maoist). March of 1982, Lagos led a raid on the Ayacucho prison freeing 360 prisoners, many of which were her revolutionary comrades. The following September Lagos was captured by the Peruvian military, at the age of 19, and raped and tortured unto her death.
ELB is dedicated to Marxism/Leninism/Maoism following closely the advanced political line promoted by the Maoist International Movement (MIM) (www.prisoncensorship.info/archive/etext). ELB subscribes to international communism supporting people's wars and struggles for liberation of oppressed nations -- both internal and external to imperialist countries. Moreover, ELB stands in opposition to: capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, militarism, jingoism, xenophobia, fascism, racism, patriarchy, homophobia, and polize oppression.
ELB's founding members are former prisoners of the united $nakes of amerikkka. As such, ELB has determined the segment of u.$. society possessing the most revolutionary potential is the prisoner population. It is ELB's underlying mission to politicize and mobilize the u.$. prisoner population through education, information, and assistance.
