MIM Notes 186 May 15 1999 MIM Notes kept out of Canada Windsor, Ontario, CANADA -- On March 29, Canadian border officials denied MIM Notes entry into Canada. A car with a bundle of MIM Notes in the trunk did not make it across the border to pass from Detroit to Buffalo and instead had to drive down through Ohio. Despite bragging about the "freest border in the world," the United $tates and Canada both exert tight controls. Canadian authorities always check the license plate of the car crossing the border through their computer system--Orwell-style. The driver of a particular car has been searched upon every entry into Canada. MIM Notes is free to anyone who wants a copy. It is available by subscription to people who want to make sure they get every issue and who do not want to take their chances getting it free. In the top right corner of the MIM Notes it is always marked free. Border officials know this from reading copies. On this particular occasion, border authorities objected to MIM Theory as well saying it fell under import/export laws; even though MIM had no plan to leave the publication in Canada and surely Canada was dealing a blow to "free speech" and association by attacking an obviously non-profit venture. MIM does not oppose the concept of free trade. We merely point out that it cannot exist until communism. Despite much ballyhoo, the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) did not in fact eliminate governmental trade barriers between the United $tates and Canada.
