Correction In MN #184, April 15, 1999 "Repression of wimmin in prison exposed" there were a number of errors. It claims that "the so- called war on drugs and sexual abuse and harassment" "hit wimmin particularly hard." Gauged by arrest rates per drug user in the population, wimmin are still let off relative to men by the injustice system. The article talks about a growth rate for imprisonment of wimmin, but being less than 10 percent of the incarcerated population itself should have been a signal to MIM that the "war on drugs" does not fall disproportionately on wimmin. Quite the contrary, the fact that it does not reveals the real reason for it--national oppression and the view of oppressed nation men as possible warriors. As we have said elsewhere, prison is not the choice of weapons against wimmin: psychiatry is much more prevalent as a system of social control for wimmin. In terms of sexual harassment and sexual abuse, the article mentions pregnant wimmin, but other than that situation, there is no particular form of sexual violence directed only at wimmin in prison. The rape and abuse of men prisoners makes them gendered female. In fact, there is no reason to believe that wimmin suffer more sexual abuse in prison than men -- it is just that more wimmin's reports of sexual abuse are published by liberal human rights groups on the outside. Some people are well-meaning in drawing attention to the struggles of prisoners. Others mean to impose an agenda to diminish the actual oppression of men in prisons. Most often our retrogression occurs because we fall victim to the lazy trends of academia and the "left" that always makes gender oppression an additive thing based on biology. We of the vanguard party seek to keep feminism sharp and not fall back on tired and untrue cliches. As revolutionary feminists, we are not slaves to academia or Rockefeller foundation grants focusing on biology. Feminism means ending sexual oppression. The vast majority of gender oppression in prison is of men. We were wrong to publish an article suggesting otherwise. Biology is not the same as gender Men/wimmin/male/female MIM uses the terms "man" and "womyn" to identify people's biology. President Clinton is a man, so are more than 90% of prisoners in the Amerikan gulags. We use the terms "female" and "male" to refer to people's gender - - where they stand on the spectrum of gender oppression. If someone is gender oppressed, we say that s/he is female. Prisoners (including men) whose sexuality is appropriated are gendered female. President Clinton is male -- being one of the biggest gender oppressors around today. Hillary is male too -- in spite of her biology -- because of her position in the Amerikan imperialist government from which she participates in appropriating sexuality of oppressed people the world over. We use different terminology to identify people's biological sex and their gender because we want to be clear that there is a difference between the two. Pseudo-feminist fiction flatters First World wimmin by telling them how oppressed they are. As we point out in the accompanying correction, this flattery only serves to mask the real flow of gender oppression.
