Puerto Rico continues fight against U.$. occupation On February 21 over 100,000 people marched through San Juan Puerto Rico to demand an end to U$ Navy bombing on the island of Vieques. The "Peace for Vieques" march was organized to reject an agreement Puerto Rican governor Pedro Rossello made with President Clinton to allow training exercises to resume on Vieques. Since World War II the U.$. navy has carried out live-fire training activities on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. The Navy claims that this training is essential to its battle readiness. The Navy says that Vieques is the only place where they can conduct both land and sea operations. For anti-imperialists this should be compelling reason to fight against the u.s. military using Vieques: we do not want a military that is battle ready, imperialist battles involve attacking the peoples' movements and installing imperialist puppet dictators. Protesters set up camps on Vieques following the April 19 death of a civilian employee killed by a Navy bomb dropped in a training. The protests have galvanized Puerto Ricans and even the good u.s. lackey Governor Rossello was forced to make some statements opposing u.s. military exercises on Vieques. But clearly Rossello remembers where his backing comes from and is now willing to support whatever the u.s. wants. Note: El Nuevo Dia (San Juan) 22 February 2000.
