Free Memik Horoz! The Maoist Internationalist Movement (MIM) calls on the Turkish government to release Memik Horoz, a journalist and the Deputy Vice Chair of the International League of Peoples' Struggle. We ask all people who support the right to free political expression for those waging a just struggle for their national and social emancipation to demand Mr. Horoz' unconditional release. Memik Horoz was arrested along with his niece Serap Horoz, on June 18, 2001 in Cemberlitas, Istanbul. They are currently detained at the Tokat City gendarmerie headquarters - a Turkish special counter insurgency unit. Conditions in Turkey's prisons are extremely brutal. The government's assault on its prisons last December which killed 28 political prisoners in only the latest in a series of abuses (see e.g. "Turkish Prisoners Win Hungerstrike," http://www.prisoncensorship.info/archive/etext/mn/mn.php?issue=120). Many of the prisoners killed last December had been tortured, as documented by the video " They Burnt Us Alive." In this context, we fear for the health and safety of Mr. Horoz and his niece. The Amerikan government tacitly encourages Turkish fascism in return for geopolitical influence in the Middle East and Asia. It stepped up military aid to Turkey after martial law was declared in the early 80s, spending about $500 million in military aid to Turkey each year from 1988 to 1993. The Turkish army uses Amerikan helicopters and other machinery in its genocidal war against the Kurdish people. Those of us living in Amerika's borders who oppose the brutal thuggery used to support the "New World Order" must speak up.
