For years, Robert Brown has played a leading role in uniting various lumpen organizations within the Oregon prison system around prisoners' rights and anti-imperialism. During that time he has faced repeated repression by prison staff and been labelled a member of Security Threat Group. In 2005, this struggle came to a head starting with the Father's Day Rebellion, in which comrade Brown was charged with kicking a Correctional Officer (CO) and threatened with 90 months in a control unit, called the Intensive Management Unit (IMU).

Following that uprising at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution there were a series of strikes in response to new restrictions on phone use in Oregon prisons, including strikes at Oregon State Penitentiary and Snake River Correctional Institution, in which Mr. Brown participated.

After being moved to Two Rivers Correctional Institution, the Security Threat Group Team tried to photograph Brown's tattoos, but he refused and was charged with misconduct. Soon after his arrival comrade Brown began organizing another hunger strike including at least 56 people. In retaliation he was charged with "Extortion", "Unauthorized Organization", "Disturbance" and "Conspiracy." These are the terms used to describe struggles for basic rights by the Oregon Department of Corruptions.

Following the phone strikes, comrade Brown was threatened with the sentence of 90 months in IMU, where he has been held since September 2005. He is scheduled for arraignment regarding these charges for January 26, 2005. He has asked that letters of support be sent to him to use to help bolster his case (see address below photo above). The links on this page provide further information that may be useful in drafting a letter. In addition you may want to look at www.abolishcontrolunits.org for more information on the torture cells they want him to rot in for the next 7.5 years. You can also use the text from his petition, which can be signed online, or check out this sample letter.

First & foremost, Revolutionary Greetings.

I want to thank everyone for the comradery on my side of this struggle against these cruel and illegal conditions I am repressed by... we all are being repressed by in whatever scale of the struggle you face. If this is the first time you've read my words, remember there are thousands of prisoners just like me who are currently being subjected to these same torturous treatments and unjust insanities. I speak for us all. I fight for us all. These dungeons of IMU-SHU and Death rows need to be stopped! We Need YOUR Help!!

Since being held against my rights & will I speak of justice, freedom, liberation and resistance. Only YOU out there can put a stop to these inhumane punishments. We are being confined like caged animals waiting to be put to death. No fresh air, denial of basic needs, including access to adequate medical. This has been going on behind the public's backs for years. Many prisoners are dying!! The untold violations of our rights need to be exposed and the murder of prisoners, and torture needs to stop. We need your help!! The sensory deprivation is torture and many prisoners lose themselves to the chaos of years of solitary confinement.

This has been the DOC's best used tactic. The IMU-SHU houses the most politically active prisoners and activists. And due to years of solitary mind torture, many prisoners become segregated and this helps build more tension and prisoner on prisoner stabbings, gang wars, beatings and destroys the focus on education, activism and, most importantly, unity.

After reading the case and writings on this website I urge you to become more involved in helping us shut down IMU-SHU for good!
