Special counsel to investigate Gonzales?

On July 26, U.S. Senate Democrats called for a special counsel to investigate Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. It turns out the then White House Counsel Gonzales's infamous visit to Ashcroft in the hospital in 2004 was about "other intelligence," not the "terrorist surveillance program" and senators are finding themselves misled or not fully informed about the controversy within the Bush administration. It regards warrantless spying.

It's called the "war on terror," so the Senate has a point that it ought to know who the war is on. If a whole country is a terrorist organization, the Senate better know it.

Now we hear that even the FBI Director Mueller had reservations about warrantless spying. He sent the FBI to make sure that Gonzales did not speak to Ashcroft in the hospital alone.

In MIM's opinion, the internal fighting was likely about pragmatic matters, not really civil liberties in its own right. The idea of spying on U.$. citizens had been accepted before, so likely the imperialists were having controversy over something practical. When certain inconveniences arose, the stated rationale of the program changed to be more similar to other programs. MIM reported previously that "terrorism" was not Vice President Cheney's only concern.(2) There are other important growth industries, which MIM discussed internally as early as November 2006.

With regard to people bitching to MIM from various angles in these politically charged times, we already said we are conducting ourselves above-board right on our web page. All readers are equally informed. Even inside MIM and its circles, it can be hard to believe the nature of the u.$. state. People who used to give money to the party and people who pushed MIM to its current position nonetheless find themselves apathetic at this moment. Others find themselves more intrigued with MIM.

We're sure we cannot say that individual spies, senators or the president are as accountable as MIM. How many of them do without email for political purposes we would ask. These executive branch people cannot even give a straight explanation to the Senate about matters of war and peace and yet people are complaining about MIM.

We would caution our critics that if they feel someone is being shafted by MIM, the reason is that they believe that others are more entitled to private communications than MIM is. MIM is doing things more publicly than any other actor. A number of our critics also favor politicians with majority or close to majority support and cannot understand that MIM is not interested in pretending to be the same. Sean Penn is already about as far as people will accept politically.
