Minnesota alternative paper suggests secession

The Minnesota equivalent of New York City's Village Voice has called for the states that voted for Gore and Kerry to secede. "Pulse of the Twin Cities" put the word "Secede" sideways on its cover for the July 4th weekend in the midst of discussion of violations of the Constitution by President Bush.(1)

One of the articles said,

"If, like me, you don’t feel like 'waiting' any longer for the system to correct itself (as we have the opportunity to at least help along every four years); if you’ve grassrooted yourself to burnout; if your specially-chosen neighborhood no longer feels like the oasis designed to shield you from the political storm raging in this postmodern nightmare; if Che Guevara’s point about living 'in the heart of the beast' seems more like a burden than a call to action; if being a citizen in a superpower nation that values munitions and corporations over health care and people is getting pretty old, maybe you’re ready for a new Declaration of Independence, one that would state why we’re sick and tired of it and we’re not going to take it anymore."(1)
The article also correctly pointed out the majority's lack of concern about civil liberties that has allowed the situation to go on so long.

The red state and blue state thing seems destined to go on, because political professionals have determined that the most cost-effective way to win voters is to push buttons that tend in that red state versus blue state direction. As we speak, billboards that could have been from 1950 are up for Congressional candidates running on only three issues. Joe Sweeney in Arizona proves that these hot buttons are becoming obvious.

Sweeney is a candidate for the House this year, but he has run as a Democrat and New Alliance Party member before. Obviously an all-out activist and opportunist, Sweeney has figured out what his district's real hot buttons are and he won the Republican primary with just three issues in 2004: 1) no gay marriage; 2) no immigrants and 3) no flag-burning. 2006 or 1950, those issues would have been the same but they won Sweeney his election and now his three issues are on billboards again. MIM is only baffled why some Republican officials are complaining about him as a "David Duke."(2) He only does what the rest of the rural Republican Party does just in even more concentrated form.

From MIM's point of view, the call of civil liberties is white nationalism tied up with the foundation of the united $tates. The word "freedom" usually precedes the bombs raining on some Third World country, the spread of pornography or a ruler's speech in a country with the highest rate of imprisonment. Nonetheless, we at MIM are Marxists but we can read the Constitution and far too many things have been done to violate it not to see how "Pulse" reached its conclusions.

The "alternative" in Minnesota fully admits lacking the umph to be called to action against empire. "It's too huge to take down" seems to be the feeling of people who would like to do something but still be left alone to an otherwise pleasant life of consumerism. What is missing of course is the struggle of the Third World people bubbling up as we speak, from northern Korea to Iran to Lebanon. Maybe, just maybe the giant cannot go on eating everything in its path. There is something that can take it down, just not inside u.$. borders.

MIM is all for secession. Ward Churchill has drawn a map of all the government-owned land that should be turned over to the indigenous people. MIM has shown maps for the creation of Aztlan. We are receiving some criticisms of our map showing Kanada and Mexico gobbling up the United $tates except for the "Christian Republic of Jesusland" that voted for Bush. Our point is to take action and our critics should send us a better map incorporating Ward Churchill's suggestions, putting in a Black nation territory and maybe giving Cincinatti to Jesusland while claiming the rest of Ohio.
