Functional Unit Managers and Jacy Duran:
This week we received a mail violation notice dated August 8 for a magazine we sent to XX a prisoner at OSP and a similar notice dated July 26 for YY a prisoner at SRCI. We would like to request an administrative review of these rejections. Per your policy we are submitting the rejected correspondence with the review request. The rejected item was a copy of our theory journal entitled MIM Theory. A copy of the publication has been sent to Jacy Duran as this review is being requested across several Oregon institutions and we hope this confusion can be cleared up all at once. Should additional copies be required for this review, please let us know.
The journal was recently rejected from both OSP and SRCI. The stated reason: "Material that threatens or is detrimental to the security, safety, health, good order or discipline of the facility, inmate rehabilitation or facilitates criminal activity is prohibited: anarchy symbol." The journal in question is devoted to the topic of criticizing anarchist theory. It does contain an anarchist symbol to represent the topic of the journal. But this symbol, in itself is not a threat to Oregon prisons. In fact, this theory journal should be welcomed by Oregon DOC staff if you oppose anarchism, since it is a criticism of anarchism as a failed strategy.
It is clear that the staff at SRCI at least leafed through the magazine because they cited both the cover picture as well as the symbol on page 62 as reasons for rejection. Had they read the introduction to the issue on page 3 they would have found that we say: "In this issue of MIM Theory we offer our present and past critiques of anarchist theory and practice, specific anarchist groups, and great moments in anarchist history." If the anarchist symbol is such a threat to the safety and security of the Oregon prisons, we trust that you will want to order multiple copies of this theory journal to distribute to counter anarchist ideas.
We hope this confusion can be cleared up so that we can send copies of this journal to prisoners in Oregon who request to study the topic of anarchism as a failed strategy.
We look forward to your swift resolution of this matter.
Thank you,
