Prison Banned Books Week
initiated in August 2024updated on September 21, 2024
During the week of September 15-21, 2024, dozens of organizations will be participating in Prison Banned Books Week by highlighting the censorship of books and literature in prisons across the United $tates. This year the focus will be on the new scourge of tablets that are serving to further restrict what literature many prisoners can access and read.
At prisonbannedbooksweek.org there are tools to send letters to your legislators and letters to the editor to call on prisons to allow donated books from organizations like ours, as well as free digital books through local libraries. Also look for #prisonbannedbooksweek on various social media platforms this week.
MIM(Prisons) and Anti-Imperialist Prisoner Support (AIPS) will be participating in this campaign by highlighting stories of censorship and tablet restrictions on our website throughout the week. On the streets we will be getting people to sign postcards in support of prisoners fighting censorship in Indiana. We also will be highlighting updates from Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and other states from prisoners who responded to the call for this campaign.
