Maoist Sojourner is a publication of the Maoist Internationalist Movement to supplement MIM Notes, MIM's bi-monthly English language newspaper. The goal of Maoist Sojourner is to disseminate news and news analysis from Maoists in the Third World, in their own words whenever possible. We will also include MIM's analysis of international news.

As Maoists, we include those who uphold Marxism-Leninism-Maoism. That includes supporting the Cultural Revolution in China (1966-1976) as the furthest advance of humanity so far and opposing the Soviet revisionism that arose with the death of Stalin in 1953 and the Chinese revisionism that arose with the arrest of the so-called "Gang of Four" and counterrevolutionary coup d'etat in China in 1976.

One difference between this publication and MIM Notes is that it will focus on societies where the labor aristocracy does not play a big role as it does in the imperialist countries like the United States, England and Japan. Hence, the labor aristocrac y will not be a dividing line question for the Maoist parties in the Third World that we publish here.

The Maoist Sojourner is needed in the imperialist countries to serve the population of both the imperialist countries and the population that migrates to the imperialist countries. A sojourner is someone who leaves a country with the expectation of returning. In many cases, sojourners leave, because they have to escape U.S. imperialist-backed puppet regimes and they hope to return after collapse of the imperialist-lackey regime.

The people represented on the masthead of Maoist Sojourner are all important Maoist revolutionaries. From left to right, they are:

• Huey Newton was a founder and the Minister of Defense of the Black Panther Party. He represents the Maoism of the oppressed nations within the imperialist borders. These nations stand between the imperialists on the one hand and the Third World on the other hand, adopting a political position between the two. Huey Newton sought to ally his nation with the Third World to gain real independence and socialism for his nation and all oppressed nations.
• Gonzalo is the Chairperson of the Communist Party of Peru (PCP). Sometimes referred to in the bourgeois press by his given name, Abimael Guzmán, Gonzalo is currently imprisoned by the fascist Peruvian regime.
• Jose Maria Sison was a founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). He currently lives in exile in the Netherlands.
• I. Kaypakkaya was the founder-leader of the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML). With the aid of the CIA, the Turkish regime tortured him to death on 18 May 1972.
• Jiang Qing was a leader of the Cultural Revolution and the so-called "Gang of Four" which was the Maoist pole in China in the 1970s. She was also Mao's wife. She was arrested during the counter-revolutionary coup that occurred after Mao's death in 1976. She died a prisoner, and still a Maoist, in 1991.
• Mao Zedong led the Chinese Revolution and developed Maoism as a higher stage of Marxism-Leninism. Mao's greatest contribution was the idea that a bourgeoisie can develop within the ruling proletarian party and try to restore capitalism. It can be opposed by politically arming the masses and with repeated Cultural Revolutions.
• Edith Lagos was a martyr of the Peruvian revolution. She led the assault on Ayacucho prison in March 1982, freeing 360 prisoners, many political. She was captured in September 1982, tortured, and killed at the age of 19.
